U.S. Open Tennis

Us Open PicAugust 26 to September 9; the greatest fortnight in American tennis.  Also known as the U.S. open, these next two weeks are sure to provide riveting entertainment.  While tennis might not have as big a following as other mainstream sports, there are still numerous reasons to watch.

  1. 120-130 mph serves- You have to be insane or have a death wish to stand in and try to return a ball coming that fast.
  2. Competitive Women- Tennis is one of the few sports where women are just as good as the men.  If you don’t believe me then look up Billie Jean King vs Bobby Riggs in the highly touted “Battle of the Sexes” match.
  3. International Competition-  Baseball belongs to America, Hockey belongs to Canada, Tennis belongs to… no one.  This years open consists of the top 10 seeds coming from 8 different countries, none of which being America.
  4. Maria Kirilenko-  Easily one of the sexiest women in sports, pair her with Maria Sharapova and you’ve got a match made in heaven

This years U.S. Open features many of the usual greats including Djokavic, Nadal, and Federer.  One thing that is unusual about this years open is how low Federer is seeded.  Federer, who has the most Grand Slam championships in tennis history, is seeded number 7, his lowest since 2002.  On the Women’s side of things, you have a familiar face atop the seedings.  Serena Williams is looking for her 5th Open Championship in 2013.

The Dapper Young Gentleman’s picks:

Men’s Singles- Rafael Nadal

Women’s Singles- Serena Williams

Liga Privada- Undercrown Robusto

Another day brings upon another cigar review.  Today we introduce the Liga Undercrown Robusto.  With a modest price of only $7 dollars, this cigar was well worth the expense.  The draw was quite loose and provided an incredibly thick smoke.  With coffee and spice undertones, this cigar was flavorful throughout.  The burn was consistent from start to finish without ever becoming harsh.  Wrapped in a dark San Andres maduro wrapper, the Undercrown is more of a medium to full-bodied cigar.  Wrapped by rollers at the Drew Estate, this cigar aptly received the nickname, “The working man’s cigar”.  Overall this cigar was very enjoyable, but for the money this gentleman would still recommend the Loose Cannon 1206.

Joey Bada$$- Waves

Another old-school jam for you fellas today.  Joey Bada$$ goes hard on this track with a laid back flow over a smooth jazz bass line.  Though he might not be well known right now, his recent collaborations with artists such as Mac Miller, Kendrick Lamar, and ASAP Rocky are sure to put him in the limelight very soon.

The Black Keys- Meet Me In The City

Old Fashioned

The “Old Fashioned” is one of the original cocktails meant for starting out your days with a bang.  What better way to start your morning than with the true necessities of life:sugar, water, and whiskey.

The Gentleman’s Sport: Golf

pga_g_bobbyjones_275 (1)

There is only one sport that combines nearly every aspect of a gentleman’s life; the great outdoors, smoking cigars, drinking, and competition.  While Babe Ruth might argue that case for baseball, we are talking about the game of golf.  There are few things in this world that can be as rewarding and as frustrating as golf.  In this game of inches, one mishap can completely alter your entire round.  Even when your round has gone astray, golf is still the ultimate game for several reasons.

1.        Competition:  In every other sport the end goal is to beat the opponent.  While that might be the same for professional golfers, the goal for most amateurs is to simply beat any previous round they have shot.  This goal is often very attainable and always leads to a feeling of fulfillment.

2.       Self-Improvement: The game of golf is one that can never be perfected.  You might play the best round of your life but there will still be some aspects that you could have done better.

3.       Surroundings:  This is the only sport other than racing where the course changes depending on where you play.  Each course has different obstacles that you have to overcome that are unique to that area.  For example you can play on the side of a mountain like the Little Rock Country Club, or in sandy dunes of East Texas at Pine Dunes Country Club.  Each course plays to strengths and weaknesses of its players.

4.       Class:  In every other sport there is some form of official that is responsible for upholding the rules.  In golf you only have yourself to hold accountable.  You have to be honest about your game because eventually it shows who the real gentlemen of the game are.

5.       Friendship:  Golf is the perfect way to go out and enjoy an afternoon with your friends.  Whether you want to go for friendly competition, or you are just looking for a reason to drink and smoke with your buds, golf is the best way to escape.

These reasons are just a few of many of why you should go out and enjoy this wonderful game.  Once you start playing on your own, you will be able to easily compile a list of your own.  With this, I will leave you with one fun fact.  The reason that a golf course has 18 holes is because there are 18 fingers of scotch in a bottle.  When St. Andrews (old course) was being built, one of the founding members allotted himself one drink per hole.  Therefore, 18 holes equal 18 shots of scotch.
